Our vision for Smart Growth America

We are a diverse, safe, supportive, and collaborative organization that fosters all staff to grow, take risks, and evolve, supporting our efforts to build healthy, prosperous, and resilient places.

DEIA values statement

At Smart Growth America, we center our work around our north star — “We envision a country where no matter where you live, or who you are, you can enjoy living in a place that is healthy, prosperous, and resilient.”

The movement for smart growth is about helping every place become a more equitable, economically prosperous, and environmentally sustainable place where communities thrive, not just survive. Despite these stated goals, we know that urban planning efforts have often harmed many communities and in particular, Black and other communities of color. This is why it is essential that we embed people-first practices in both in our internal culture and external work.

Empowering change

We acknowledge that fostering an inclusive workplace requires continuous growth and reflection. Thus, only by embedding this work into our culture will we be able to effectively wield the smart growth movement to support communities to achieve transformative change that helps them become healthier, more prosperous, and more resilient places to live for all people.

Embedding inclusivity in both our internal culture and external work is essential to:

  • Create well-equipped SGA leaders to achieve our mission.
  • Welcome and celebrate perspectives that are representative of many backgrounds and perspectives.
  • Dismantle the systems and policies which have physically harmed and prevented access and wealth-building among low-income communities, folks of all abilities, and communities of color.
  • Inspire change through the members of our coalitions and all of our constituencies.
