On Saturday, August 18, city officials from Las Cruces and county officials from Doña Ana County met together to inform the public and gather feedback on the region’s plans for the future. The meeting was meant to give “people in the community a chance to learn what this very big planning effort is all about,” County Commissioner Billy Garrett explained. “It gave people the opportunity to talk to the planners, make suggestions and, overall, to get the public involved. I think the turnout was great.”
Funded by a HUD Regional Planning grant, the Camino Real Consortium is seeking to create a regional vision based on seven planning initiatives: Border Economic Development Plan, Engagement and Education, Corridor Management Plan, Colonia (Community) Master Plan, Comprehensive Plan for Sustainable Development, Regional Capital Needs Plan and Unified Code for Sustainable Development.
Said Garrett,
“What businesses want and what residents want are good communities. This is why good planning is key. This is not about just coming in and plunking down a building. It’s about sharing ideas and developing plans for housing, for shops or for factories. This is just the beginning of an ongoing planning process.”
