This month, we’re looking back at some of Smart Growth America’s brightest moments and greatest accomplishments from 2013. First on the list? We’re celebrating the over 550 Complete Streets policies that have been enacted in the United States.
Complete Streets policies help create streets that are safe and convenient for everyone who uses them, and today over 550 communities across the country have enacted such policies. That’s a milestone worth celebrating.
In August the National Complete Streets Coalition, a program of Smart Growth America, brought together transportation officials and national smart growth experts in Washington, DC, to celebrate the accomplishment. The celebration made particular note of Memphis, TN, the community that adopted the 500th Complete Streets policy, and discussed the good Complete Streets policies are doing around the country as well as next steps for the movement. If you weren’t able to join us in August, watch an archived recording of the event.
The National Complete Streets Coalition is working to help even more communities make their streets safer. In June, Representatives Doris Matsui and David Joyce introduced the Safe Streets Act of 2013, which would encourage communities to consider Complete Streets policies, and make Complete Streets the national standard for roadway design.
Many communities are making streets safer and more convenient for everyone who uses them through Complete Streets policies, but there is much more work to be done. Donate today to celebrate this milestone and help even more communities in 2014:
