Vacant properties are more than eyesores. They keep prospective homebuyers away, lower property values, contribute to neighborhood decline, and can threaten public safety and health. As in many other communities, vacant properties pose a chronic problem in Kansas City, MO, where the problem is exacerbated by one of the highest rates in the nation for abandoned foreclosed homes, according to USA Today.
In 2009, Kansas City passed an ordinance requiring all vacant and foreclosed properties to be formally registered with the City’s Neighborhoods and Housing Services Department within 90 days of becoming vacant and within 14 days of foreclosure. Registration of empty properties enables better code enforcement, maintenance standards, and security measures, all of which are critical to combating neighborhood blight.
