Zoning for Transportation Choices | Berkeley, CA

All zoning codes set standards for private car parking, but most leave the other modes largely unaddressed. However, some communities are starting to modernize zoning regulations. Berkeley, CA updated its zoning code to take a more multimodal approach in the downtown, mixed-use district.

The “Parking – number of spaces” section of the Berkeley’s Ordinance sets rules to encourage transportation choices in new developments, including accommodation for bikes, shared vehicles, and public transit promotion. Highlights of the code include the following.
