Uncover the urgent truths behind America’s rising pedestrian fatalities and explore transformative solutions to create safer, more inclusive streets for everyone. Join us in reimagining our roadways—prioritizing people over cars to protect lives.
In 2022, over 7,500 people were killed while walking in the U.S.—20 deaths a day. Dangerous by Design 2024 reveals how dangerous streets are designed, disproportionately impacting Black, Native American, older adults, and low-income communities.
Our first Dangerous by Design 2024 release took a national and metro-focused look at the crisis of people struck and killed while walking on streets across America, deaths that have increased by 75 percent since 2010. The risk is not shared equally.
This report includes pedestrian fatality statistics and ranks the largest 101 metro areas. All are too dangerous
To continue our exploration into how the design of our streets—designed primarily to move cars quickly at the expense of keeping everyone safe—is connected to this historic increase in pedestrian deaths, we are releasing this addendum looking more closely at state-level trends.
Our final release ranked all 435 congressional districts (plus one in the District of Columbia) to show which members of Congress represent the most deadly congressional districts in the US.
