Dangerous by design

The Most Deadly Congressional District

Our streets, built primarily for cars, prioritize speed over safety, leading to this tragic crisis. To address this urgent issue, we must prioritize safety for all road users and hold those in power accountable.

A Legacy of Division

In 2022, over 7,500 people were killed while walking in the U.S.—20 deaths a day. Dangerous by Design 2024 reveals how dangerous streets are designed, disproportionately impacting Black, Native American, older adults, and low-income communities.

National Trends and Metro Rankings

Our first Dangerous by Design 2024 release took a national and metro-focused look at the crisis of people struck and killed while walking on streets across America, deaths that have increased by 75 percent since 2010. The risk is not shared equally.

This report includes pedestrian fatality statistics and ranks the largest 101 metro areas. All are too dangerous.

State of the States

To continue our exploration into how the design of our streets—designed primarily to move cars quickly at the expense of keeping everyone safe—is connected to this historic increase in pedestrian deaths, we are releasing this addendum looking more closely at state-level trends.
